Saturday Musings (Feb 27)

It's a grayish day. The sun almost shines through but the clouds persist. The cold, cold winter has ceased to trouble us for awhile. I love the warmer air! It makes me think of life. The cold is like death.

Sitting here, holding a sleeping baby, I will write while I have the opportunity. What else is Google docs for?

My days feel unproductive many times. The to-do list remains undone. But baby care wasn't on the list. Yet it is the most important thing I could be doing.

Diana enjoys "helping me" do whatever I'm doing. She is very interactive, very sociable, most content to be with someone.

But it must be someone she's comfortable with. If you respect her, she'll warm up to you pretty soon. If you try to force yourself on her, you're a marked person.

All that to say, she sticks quite closely to Mama during the day. I try not to carry her around too much, though she begs to be held. She's a solid chunk and my back protests the abuse.

She's using more words. She loves to eat. When she has eaten up her portion, she'll hold up her bowl and say, "Mo". When I'm preparing a snack for her, cheese slices, apple slices, or whatever, she'll ask to have it in a bowl by just saying, "Bowl."

She loves I Spy books and will let you know she wants to look at one by saying/asking, "By?" (“Spy?”) Coming near the woodstove or oven, seeing steaming food or drink, she says, "Hot!" For some reason, she loves to find pictures of owls in books. Often when she's looking at a book she'll be asking "owl?" It's amazing how many books actually do have at least one picture of an owl.

Thomas has been suffering this past week from wounds received when a garage door spring let loose unexpectedly. He got a nasty whack and cut on his hand/ arm. His chest also got a beating and he's been dealing with bruises. His left hand has not been very useful, though only bruised as far as we know. Not broken. Matthew, Melvin, and Christopher have been doing the door work while Thomas supervises.

On the days when Melvin is at home, he spends a lot of time pruning trees. It’s one of his favorite things to do! He's experimenting with grafting fruit trees this year. A number of citrus and avocado trees are growing in our house, which he started from seeds. I think he needs to build a conservatory.

Speaking of citrus, we've been enjoying delicious oranges and grapefruit from California this winter. We just got our second order of two cases of grapefruit and one case of oranges. Hearing one of the ladies at church say she makes concentrate from lemons and freezes it, I also ordered a case of those. Fresh tasting lemonade in the summer will be awesome.

That is as far as my musings went on this Saturday afternoon. I'll be back at a later date.

Just Daily Doings

It must be a weekly thing right now to get an arctic blast. Today the temperature is 10° with a "real feel" of minus 5-14. Tomorrow's forecast says wind chills of -14. The guys went out and cut a load of firewood today. I guess they thought that would be a warmer job than door installation.

Plus Thomas is the man for the topic at Bible study this evening so he wanted some time to study for that.

Austin and Matthew went this late afternoon to unload doors at the shop. Eight doors came in on this load. Melvin is busy with his hatchet at the cow's water trough. That's a sheet of ice he's thrown that you see between the rails.
I've been doing housework, reading and writing today. Fighting a headache so am not very active. Laundry and kitchen work are all I'm getting done.

The boys feel certain that their time for ice skating has come this week. If it weren't for Bible study this evening they would likely be on a pond somewhere. But maybe tomorrow evening or the next. It doesn't appear as though it will warm up until Saturday.

On Monday Thomas made a second trip to his mom's place in southern WV, taking Melvin with him. They didn't have quite as long a day as they did last week and feel certain that the water lines are repaired in the house now. The water source is a spring in a cave so they traced the lines back to the source and saw that there is a good bit of work to be done there yet. There are whole sections of the line missing. Which means yet another trip.

Thomas was thankful to be able to send Austin and Matthew out for a three door installation on Monday. They can do it on their own now which is a tremendous blessing.

Last evening the guys were all gone to Romney for another evening of work on the Kid's Club building. They report good progress. Will it be ready for Kid's Club to begin in March?

A group from here, along with people from elsewhere, went to Honduras for a week of Bible school for the native children this week. This is the third year they've done it, I believe.

In my last post I mentioned Melvin's thirst for reading. He gathered up the books he's read recently so he could record them. I snapped a picture of the stack. The fat book on the bottom is a (well read or used) Sherlock Holmes collection.
We ate a late breakfast today and a very late lunch so I made a peach cobbler for a light "meal" before Bible study. It's something quick and good. I don't know what they'll want to eat when they get home. I'm not going but even if I did, I wouldn't want to eat again when I got home. But they do! Long, hollow legs. Lol

My nose is running a lot today. Don't know if I'm fighting a cold? Or is it because I read of another mother's miscarriage? (That DID make my nose run sorely. I know that kind of loss too well.) Or because I cut up onions? Or maybe all of the above.

I've been reading a lot. Free Kindle books. G. A. Henty books. The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Also On Sunday a friend gave me a magazine called Above Rubies. Very interesting family type stories/testimonies. She says the magazine is free.
Tell me about life in your world. Is it cold? Do you have animals to care for? Is your house warm? What challenges are you facing?

Change of Occupation

Over the last year Thomas has helped an overhead doors contractor a lot. This contractor asked him if he would like to buy the business. The contractor was moving away from the area and his business covered three states- West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia.
It was a job that suited Thomas well. Repetitious work. Not a lot of time to estimate a job. Not a lot of time running after supplies. A lot less headache. But the cost of the business was prohibitive. We already had enough debt and the bank wouldn't give him the loan he needed. So he had to give it up.
He continued helping the contractor occasionally with large jobs. After a few months the contractor said he has no one to buy the business so he'll either have to just quit and walk away or give it away. Was this from the Lord?
Thomas chose to believe that it was and took over the door business. Now he is busier than he has ever been. The boys are able to help him and there's no shortage of work. No waiting on supplies. Except when the company sends the wrong thing. Like a 10 ft panel for a 14 ft door.
He has a few construction jobs left on his plate that have been driving him crazy. He can hardly wait to finish those up and get them off his mind. But we are grateful to have plenty of work that can be done even in rainy weather.
A lot of his jobs are just "handed to him" by a company that sells to a pole building company. These make up the majority of his work. They just call him, tell him when the doors need to be installed and ship the doors to the shop. How easy is that?
One problem we face is not owning a place to put the doors until they are installed. We are currently using the previous owner's shop but if he sells it, we're "up the creek". You can join us in prayer about that.

This job was a beast. In the top photo you can see mud. They said it was awful to work in. Mud sucking at your feet at every step. The doors were huge.

Another time they went, the concrete was poured, making it easier to work. Interestingly, the last name of the client was Boggs. The guys referred to this one as the Mud Bog job.
